to August 10th, the chief executive of San Jose Art Hall Ding Donghui invited
Chen Jun to San Jose for personal exhibition - "Reforger – Solo Exhibition
of Chen Jun". This exhibition is sponsored by the United States of San
Jose Art hall, the American Dibei Artists Association, Chen Jun exhibited
nearly 30 works, and held the opening ceremony on 5th.

Chen Jun's
creation of new ink paintings was appreciated by American art critics, Chen Jun
said that he came from a painter background, although the process of study was
mainly ink and wash painting, he also studied oil painting, therefore, his works
fused Chinese and Western elements. His series of "genetic
fragments", at first glance, looks like an outline of ink and wash
painting, while the middle is decorated with colorful mineral pigments. He said
that he uses of traditional Chinese culture gene of rice paper, brush and ink,
the composition of landscape painting style, draw frame, be dotted with
internal bright mineral pigment, that showing a bustling night feel,
"these with representatives of the modern man empty and flaunty heart,
Chinese traditional landscape only symbolic entities all gone." A series
of "Classic, Today's allusion", this is modern ink painting and
copying ancient paintings are put together to form a strong contrast, "I
hope that through such a collision, dialogue, let people think, the rupture of
the traditional humanistic spirit and culture."

said that Chen Jun's works is very distinctive, "Chinese and Western
painting are integrated in the form, materials and concepts, but also into the
modern style, maintain beauty, decorative significance, so many mainstream
critics appreciate it." He pointed out that in recent years, San Jose Art
City Hall and art circles in Asia to strengthen cooperation, hope that through
the exhibition, let American mainstream know more about Asian mainstream
creativity, also let the Asian creaters to the United States to show their
skills.

Preface
In twentieth century, the famous French
literary giant Romain•Rolland feeling life and praise creatures in his
literature masterpiece of Nobel prize "John•Christophe", he wrote:
praise to joy, joy like mad, just like a sun shining on all current and future
achievements, the joy of creation, the joy of the gods! Creation is the only
pleasure, only the creatures that create are creatures, and the rest are
unrelated to life and floating in the shadow of the ground. All the joys of
life are the joys of creation...... the poor man, unable to produce, were left
alone in the world, displaced, watching the withered flesh and the darkness of
his heart, and never gave birth to a flame of life! Poor is the soul that knows
can not produce, it is not like a tree full of spring flowers, carrying the
vigor of life and love! …… This typical Bergson’s view of life and Beethoven's
art theory have had a wide influence on American young artists in the twentieth
Century. Creation is the joy, creation is to eliminate dead ideas, its combine
with the inherent pursuit of spiritual freedom of America, praise highly
artistic innovation and praise transforming the world spirit and finally formed
a special tone of American art keynote——the realization of artistic life;
reforge the form of beauty; art is to create, re-create, and re-re-create.
Painter Chen
Jun is a young creative artist whom I met in China in recent years. He has
formed his own painting language gradually in his years of artistic exploration
and innovation. In the pursuit of the beauty of artistic form, he realized that
the classical beauty did not correspond with the modern symbol. In Mr. Chen
Jun's paintings, we look through the beauty of the symbol which is “like the
digital spirit code of Silicon Valley of the United States" and the unreal
force “magic and mysterious virtual reality, reconstruction of the future",
it seems to make people reading the classical rhyme in the modern aesthetic
meaning form, and installed a modern aesthetic "zinc" and the
variegation of era in Chinese classical landscape painting composition
prototype. We all attracted by the mysterious atmosphere which is something
like impression but floating on the surface of the object, and also always be
shocked by the extremely strong infection and new performance.
Considering
from his creative ideas of art, his creative ideas coincide with the spirit of
American art. In 2016, I introduced he joined the famous American Dubey Artists
Association, and through this American famous international art bridge
organization, his paintings was introduced to the western United States
mainstream artist circles and critic circles and also Art Council San Jose. In
the 2016 "Dubey Chinese painters go to the United States selection preview
exhibition— Barbara•Pollack Comment
Master Class", which was organized by Dubey•Rolfe Wei Palace International
Art Exchange Center, the famous American art critic Barbara•Pollack praised
Chen Jun’s work "very innovative, opened a new perspective in the
exploration of Chinese modern art!". In addition, Mr. Chen Jun’s original
works also caused a wide response in San Jose (Silicon Valley) occupation
painter circles. The fine arts branch president of American Dubey Artists
Association Blank•Nair was amazed by his creativity :"his paintings
reflect future thinking, perhaps can inspire Silicon Valley’s art and
innovation inspiration which is intergenerational......"
In the age of the deep communication of
Sino-American culture, as the U.S. government cultural ambassador and American
art administrator, I introduced the painter Chen Jun and his works to the
American artists, famous art critics, famous universities of the arts, National
Art Museums, galleries and famous American art publishing house and the
American government platform of culture and art. As a international rookie
Dubey painter by Arts Council San Jose who is rigorous screening and specially
invited, and also as a very promising Chinese young artist, I expect his
personal exhibition can share his innovative ideas and creative skills and
aesthetic experience with the American artists. And as a window to know more
about Chinese artists, I also expect in
the elaborate planning and arrangements of Arts Council San Jose, the "Re
Create——Chen Jun's Solo Exhibition" will achieve a great success and make
a influence and resonance in American! Finally, specially thanks to the strongly
support by Dubey• Rolfe Wei Palace International Center and the San Jose
National Art Fund!

preface
This is my first overseas solo exhibition.
I would like to appreciate the executive officer of Arts Council San Jose Mr.
Ding Donghui’s invitation. I met Mr. Ding in cultural exchange activity in 2015
and we both had a good impression on each other. It’s really adorable that Mr.
Ding has done a lot of things for the cultural exchange between China and the
United States over the years. It was a great honor for me to be invited to
attend this exhibition in the United States and favored by Mr. Ding. I received
the invitation two years ago, but maybe it is too much to cherish this
opportunity for me, I want to create better works and don’t dare to act
recklessly. I still feel perterbed even after more than a year’s preparation.
Now I take my works come to this free and diversified and inclusive country,
and to accept the criticism from my friends who love art.
Borders are
redefined in this globalized and networked age. The boundary of culture and art
has been breached. As an art form and culture value, ink painting cannot be
confined to a regional monolingual state. What we are facing in this age is not
only our own traditions but also the multi-culture of globalization. Ink
painting plays an important role in the process of internationalization and
contemporary transformation. The uniqueness of ink art is also the specific
identity of Chinese artists in the international context. Traditional ink
painting has been lost in the present context. Our own tradition’s
re-understanding about the ink art should be with a new aesthetic vision and
the concept of the times should be integrated into the thinking of contemporary
culture, and then realize traditional ink’s transformation in contemporary
world. To find an effective art form in the contemporary context, and participate
in the extensive international cultural exchanges with a different ethnic
identity. At the intersection of eastern and Western culture, we need rethink
the possibility of “re create" of ink painting in contemporary. “Re
create” is not repeat but overturn, It is to re-explore and re-learn and
re-create the traditional culture in the current cultural background.
There is a lot
of commonness in any painting art when it comes back to the noumenon, this
kind of commonality is the feeling of pure emotion after divestment of regional
cultural differences. This kind of purity is also the communication of art in
the “language” ontology, and the other part which is not easy to perceive is
the manifestation of the difference of the heterogeneous culture. My work is
based on our own cultural gene "Chinese ink", I try to return to the
origin to find a common and also personal drawing language to intervene in the
multicultural context of today's globalization. Ink painting is not an end, but
a way of thinking.
There is a
link between my painting language "spot" and the traditional
"Cun". The “Cun” in traditional Chinese landscape is a kind of
artistic language which is extracted by the artist's natural and inner
aesthetic. This language is an art language that transcends technology and has
a spirit of life. I paint in layers of ink spots, over and over again. The
experience of this way of life is also like spiritual practice. It seems there
is a spiritual connection with traditional Cun. The traditional Cun is
corresponding to the farming culture, but now it is a material age under the
industrial civilization. The spiritual experience brought by this ink spots of
mine is more like a kind of life experience of nothingness and Utopia. The
humanistic spirit represented by the traditional landscape is only a body and
symbol at this moment, but I am not tired of dealing with the bustling urban
landscape. This inner stillness corresponds to external movement. I feel that
my painting process is like an act, a sense of life. It let me rise to a
philosophical experience and introspection on the sense of life existence.
In my work, I
deliberately retain rice paper, writing brush and ink, these materials with
strong oriental cultural genes are full of spiritual Aesthetics. And in the
expression, it uses the modern linguistic that melt through the East and west,
which also contains the thinking of cultural heritage and the infiltration of
eastern and Western cultures. I would also like to know what sparks can collide
with these works in different cultural contexts. I'm looking forward to it and
I think it's interesting and worth thinking about.
